Today, I am 20K words away from being finished an edit that should have been finished last week. This means I will be editing all weekend probably.
Editing is my least favorite tasks. Writing is the fun part. Even revisions are exciting. Sort of. In the way that you get a second chance to say what you wanted to say, just better.
Editing is a more left-brained mechanical chore that sends me into my analytical side. It’s no longer about the story at that point, but the technical correctness of the thing. It feels more like factory work to me where I just contribute to a product but cannot get emotional about it.
Yesterday, I had five cups of coffee. I don’t think five is enough.
However, this does (of course) inspire a whole new novel that I now want to write. The main character is trapped in a world where emotion has been outlawed and a computer chip keeps everyone well within the legal guidelines. And then, our main character gets struck by a wayward bolt of lightning that somehow managed to escape its own climate-controlled boundaries.
Rats. Now I want to write instead of edit. Ugh.
Onward and upward.
